MAST developed in the spring of 2013 from trio of veteran musicians influenced by the modern southern metal scene, 90’s alternative, instrumental post-metal, and swampy, sludgy doom. More specific influences would be Black Sabbath, Pelican, Electric Wizard, Thursday, and Deftones.
The musical compositions by Mike and T.R. featured long, dramatic orchestrations that incorporated simple time signatures & hooks that kept the songs in consistent motion. With such a variety of influences to pull from, they sought out a vocalist who could bring a strong, melodic voice that would complement & beautifully contrast the drama & catharsis within the music. Heidz fit that description perfectly.
By late Fall 2013, MAST finalized the development of 8 songs that were rehearsed throughout the winter season until their first show on February 1, 2014. Since that date, MAST has played a variety of venues between Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, Germantown, Madison and Milwaukee. These shows featured many diverse & talented bands who also share a passion for writing and performing original music. It is not unusual to see a creepy gnome or 2 hanging out at a MAST show or maybe even some chickens.
MAST released their first LP “Rise to the Top” on August 2, 2014 at Ziggy’s Corner Pub in Fond du Lac. You can purchase the album from https://mastwisconsin.bandcamp.com/releases or http://www.reverbnation.com/mast4
The album tells the story of a girl who has lost her voice and her connection to her vision. (Don’t Go) She is exhausted and feels like a slave to her job. (Broken Beaten and Submissive) In her misery she does not let herself become victimized for long. She identifies the hang ups internally that are holding her creativity back. (Perfection) She lets go of the unnecessary burden of guilt after battling with an impossible relationship that was overly controlling. (Natural Disaster) She reconnects with her dreams and desires and finds the people that share her vision. (CF) As the pieces are coming together one final event pushes her to action. She loses her best friend to a car accident and realizes how little time she has to spend with people she loves because she is always working. There has got to be a better way! (One by One You Die) A morbid motivator convinces her to take a leap of faith and try one more time to live the life she has always dreamed of. A life where there is time to work, love, create, laugh, sleep, and enjoy nature in perfect balance. A life where there is time to spend with people before it is too late. After being knocked down so many times she finds herself right where she dreamed to be. (Rise to the Top) She is amazed that made it and excited to tell everyone to keep trying. You will be knocked down. You will come across impossible hurdles. Keep fighting for the life you want. Believe in yourself and surround yourself with positive people that believe in you and encourage you. Shoot for the moon and if you miss you will still land among the stars. Never give up. You only fail when you quit.
